KANA KAWANISHI GALLERY is pleased to present “Picture(s) II,” a solo exhibition by Kazuhito Tanaka starting June 20, 2025. This exhibition will feature new works from Tanaka’s Picture(s) series, which he has been working on intensively in recent years, as well as his latest series, Picture(s) II, a further development of the original series.
Tanaka has presented works that open up new possibilities for abstract expression through photography from various angles, based on the relationship between photography and painting.
The Picture(s) series presented in this exhibition is based on the origins and history of photography and painting, specifically color photograms created in the darkroom and paintings made with paint, while also presenting an entirely new type of picture. In his latest series, Picture(s) II, he examines the structure of Picture(s) and sublimates it into a picture that can be interpreted in a more complex way by further layering.
This exhibition marks a new development for Tanaka, who has consistently explored the boundaries between “what is photography” and “what is painting” from his unique photographic perspective. If Picture(s) was an achievement, Picture(s) II marks the beginning of a new chapter.
In the past few years, Kazuhito Tanaka has been exhibiting abroad in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Vienna, Lisbon, and other cities, receiving high acclaim. This will be his first solo exhibition in Japan in two years, and his first at our gallery in three years. We cordially invite all to experience the new chapter of exploring the new realm of pictures.

Artist Statement
In Picture(s), a color photogram using color photographic paper and a painting using paint are juxtaposed on the same plane, creating a state in which they coexist equivalently.
In Picture(s) II, the color photograms and paintings are not only juxtaposed but also have a back-and-forth relationship with depth. In addition to the painting, a new element of drawing is added, making the structure more complex.
What is revealed by mixing painting and photography in the same work? Something that is neither painting nor photography. Something that is both a painting and a photograph. I think about what lies between the two. About the infinite picture between light and light.
