KANA KAWANISHI GALLERY is pleased to present “TRAVELING along with LETTERS,” a solo exhibition by Ryuhei Yokoyama starting September 21, 2024.
Ryuhei Yokoyama, who has consistently explored “What is a city?” as a photographer, began his career with black-and-white film street snapshots. Now, in addition to printing on various substrates using all kinds of techniques, he continues to actively present new series, sometimes washing and damaging the printed prints himself to embody in three dimensions the complex aspects of a city in constant transformation through repeated scrap-and-build cycles.
In this exhibition, Yokoyama will present a new series of LETTERS, following an introspective journey to explore his cultural roots and incorporating the hymn of words that influenced him from his youth. Words and photographs are, in fact, close to each other, not making sense as a single word or a single print. They have spun stories large and small by forming a context and recording humankind’s activities.
We hope you will look forward to Yokoyama's new aspect of expression, which continues to renew itself based on his unshakable identity as a photographer while keeping an eye on the city’s ever-accelerating mobility.

Artist Statement
The novels, music, poems, or even simpler words I had encountered throughout my life.
Somehow forgotten, deep in the recesses of our unconscious memory, they have been unremarked upon.
And yet, as time goes by, they become unwritten images, spinning together in an unwritten, unshakable whole.
Eventually, they became a melody that continued to make noise and echo quietly in my eyes.
Looking back on it now, it took me on a journey through the streets, through cities and landscapes,
It was like a letter from far away, taking me on a journey through cities and landscapes.
I will walk out into the landscape again amid a never-ending song that echoes faintly──.
